Chasing Your Freedom is committed to help you create a vision, crush your debt, and get your hustle on so that you can make your job optional and focus on living the life you truly want.
Recently I sent an e-mail to several entrepreneurs whom I consider to be rockstars and I asked them this:
Can you provide some uncommon advice for freedom chasers who are starting or building a business (aka side hustling) while working full-time jobs?
As I anticipated, I received a wealth of wisdom and a wide variety of responses. They totally delivered for you!
So sit back, enjoy, and let me know what you think in the comments section!

Surprisingly, the #1 rule of business has been forgotten in favor of guru-platitudes and other selfish mantras. Knowing the rule can help you quit that 9-5 faster: The rule is to make sure your business provides identifiable *value* predicated on a marketplace need or deficiency.
Too many business owners start businesses based on false premises (doing what they love, doing what they know, follow your passion) and the entire journey becomes an UPHILL BATTLE simply because the market doesn’t need what they offer. Having a product-centric business birthed on need puts a TAILWIND at your back.
When you’re simultaneously working a full time job and trying to grow a business during your off hours, you have to have a powerful product-position in order to force the kind of growth needed to give you the power to tell the boss … “I QUIT!”

Maximize Your Lunch Breaks. You have to understand that you are in career transition, and when you are in transition you have to leverage your time as much as possible. So learn to utilize your lunchbreak to work on your dream. One hour wisely invested each day, quickly adds up.
Think about it. If you just used 3 lunch breaks per week to really focus on building your dream, at the end of a month that’s about 12 hours that you have dedicated towards your dream. So use your lunch hour to research, attend a networking function, write, listen to a teleclass, participate in a webinar, be coached by a mentor in your field, watch a training on YouTube about a topic that is relevant to you dream, read a book by a guru in your dream industry, or event attend a presentation given my experts in your industry.

My advice is to be very strict about what you focus on at different times during your day. While you are at your “day job”, do your best to focus on your day job. Do good work at your regular job, because there is never a guarantee that your side business will work out. So keep your boss happy. Also, while you are with your family, focus on your family. Keep your spouse and children happy. However, when its “business time” focus as much as possible and work diligently on your business!
I would recommend setting aside whatever time you can afford, maybe an hour or 2 each day. And during those hours try not to think of anything but how you can grow your business. If you focus your time and energy using these guidelines you are much more likely to keep a positive balance in all aspects of your life while you try to launch a new venture.

Focus less on the boring fundamentals (how to incorporate an LLC, a P/L statement, a business plan, and the like…and instead focus on finding out what it is that gets you excited in the morning, no matter how tired you are.
It’s that excitement that will be essential to get through the Dip, those long nights, and the intense moments of self-doubt.

Without a doubt, the most uncommon strategy is being consistent. No matter what your goals are, you can dominate 99% of the competition by being more consistent than everyone else.
Some people call it efficiency, others call it determination, but regardless of what you call it just make sure that each day you’re taking one step towards your goal. Don’t give up and you’ll be shocked by where you are one year from now … if not sooner.
Susan Lassiter-Lyons, Real Estate Investor, Author, and Educator

Susan started TWO businesses while working a full-time job with a 90-min commute. Now she has a business valued at $5M!
Yes, it’s called the Car Office. Here’s how it works. You check emails and return calls to voicemail first thing in the morning. On your commute listen to Tony Robbins or some other motivational speaker to get you pumped. At work you get and need to TAKE your breaks and lunch. No more schmoozing with the co-workers on break or eating lunch at your desk. RUN to your car to WORK. You can get in a good 1.5 hours a day during your other job plus the hours before/after work (turn off the TV!) and on the weekends.
To make it happen you need a car, cell phone, lunchbox, laptop or a clipboard and pen. Get good at scheduling calls and when leaving voicemails let people know exactly what time you are available for a call back. The lack of time excuse is a block that your brain is throwing out of fear. It’s the lamest excuse there is to avoid claiming your freedom!

I learned the hard way to manage my energy, not just my time. I first learned this principle from the book The Power of Full Engagement, where the authors talk about the importance of managing your work as a series of sprints and recovery — not a marathon.
The key is recovery — most of us with side hustles are great at the sprint, but we forget to give ourselves time to rest and re-energize. Even if it feels like you don’t have time, it’s critical to maintaining your sanity and building something sustainable.

Focus on ONE PROBLEM, ONE SOLUTION. The thing is: Less isn’t just MORE. It’s MUCH MUCH MORE. I can already tell you that if you’re not focusing, you’re going to fail. Don’t like hearing that? Tough.
In a hyper-stimulated, information overwhelmed world, the deck is already stacked against entrepreneurs.
Your lack of time won’t hinder you when you are hyper-focused on just doing YOUR ONE THING better than anyone else in the world.

If you are trying to start a side business while working a full time job, one of the keys is to be more efficient at work. Don’t dilly dally or waste time while you’re at the office. Instead, go above and beyond, get all of your work done at your day job quickly so you have more time to focus on your own business.
Most personal development gurus will tell you otherwise, but even if are bored or complacent with your current job, stick with it with the intention of being your own boss in the future. The extra monetary security will allow you to make more intelligent decisions about your business without feeling the pressure to make money immediately.
Thank you so much to all of my rockstars entrepreneurs for your awesome contributions!
